Outreach Specialist - ADRD Rural Outreach and Prevention
ALASKA RESIDENTS ONLY
$28.85 per hour

This is one of the most unique opportunities we have come across! Yes, you need a heart for a mission, but you also need a sense of adventure! This role will take you all over the final frontier to isolated, underserved Alaska communities. You might get there by plane, maybe you'll drive, perhaps you'll have a rocky boat voyage or exhilarating snow-machine expedition - all in the name of spreading the word about the amazing resources and assistance offered by our client.

It is not for the faint-hearted, but definitely for the big-hearted.

This position focuses on underserved communities outside the Anchorage and Mat-Su region, building strong partnerships with local organizations and tribal entities, and delivering culturally responsive outreach and education.

Your day-to-day:
Community outreach and Engagement: You’ll work closely with tribal health organizations, senior centers, public health agencies, and other rural groups to foster strong, collaborative relationships. From planning and participating in health fairs and local gatherings to leading outreach efforts that raise awareness about Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD), your work will help bring vital information and support to communities that need it most. You'll also have the opportunity to create and share culturally respectful materials—especially tailored for Alaska Native and Indigenous populations—to ensure everyone has access to resources and services that promote early detection and risk reduction.

Education and Awareness: In this role, you’ll bring critical information about Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) directly to the people who need it. Whether you're delivering engaging presentations on risk factors and early detection or connecting individuals to the support services available in their community, your work will empower others with knowledge. You'll collaborate with healthcare providers and community leaders to roll out focused awareness campaigns and champion proven risk reduction strategies through hands-on community engagement.

Client and Family Support: You will provide thoughtful referrals to ARA’s education programs, care coordination, and other supportive services. By conducting initial needs assessments within the community, you'll assist with finding barriers and gaps that impact access to ADRD care. You'll also perform non-diagnostic memory screenings, helping individuals take important first steps toward understanding their cognitive health and connecting them to the care they may need.

Program Evaluation and Reporting: Keeping clear records of outreach efforts is important, tracking the number of clients served, referrals made, and gaps in services identified. You'll prepare reports that summarize key activities, client outcomes, and notable results to help meet grant requirements and demonstrate program impact. You'll also support ongoing program evaluations, surveys, and improvement efforts to ensure outreach remains effective, efficient, and aligned with community needs.

Administrative Support: You’ll contribute to developing practical strategies to address access barriers to ADRD services, particularly in rural communities. Your work will also help ensure program activities stay on track with grant metrics, including client engagement numbers, completed outreach efforts, and the strength of community partnerships.

You need:
  • A bachelor’s degree in social work, public health, education, or a related field is preferred.
  • One to two years of outreach or community engagement experience in rural or underserved areas.
  • Experience working with and strong knowledge of Alaska Native/American Indian populations and rural communities is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of ADRD, aging populations, or healthcare services is an asset.
  • Ability to pass a state and federal criminal background check.
  • Valid Alaska driver’s license, a good driving record, and proof of auto insurance.
  • Availability for occasional evening and weekend events.
  • Ability to travel throughout rural Alaska. This could be via motor vehicle, snow machine, water, or aircraft, in all seasons. This role is approximately 40-60% travel.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to engage with diverse community members, internal teams, and external partners.
  • Ability to deliver presentations to varied audiences, including seniors, caregivers, and healthcare professionals.
  • Proficiency in data collection, reporting, and outreach technology tools.
  • Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple outreach efforts simultaneously.
  • Ability to sit or stand at a computer workstation for extended periods.
Physical demands and work environment:
  • This position requires regular travel to rural communities throughout Alaska, which may involve small aircraft, boats, or long-distance driving in varying weather conditions.
  • Must be able to lift and carry materials up to 30 pounds, including outreach supplies and display materials.
  • Requires the physical ability to bend, reach, climb stairs, and set up/take down exhibit booths and event materials.
  • Frequent use of a computer and other standard office equipment is required.
  • Work is performed in both office settings and community environments, including health fairs, community centers, and outdoor events.
