What your day-to-day might look like: 
The Communications & Sustainability Officer plays a vital role in amplifying the mission and impact of the organization. This position requires a deep understanding of its philosophy, history, and values, ensuring that messaging remains authentic and meaningful to staff, youth, and the broader community.
Working closely with the Development Team, this role strengthens community presence and promotional efforts. Responsibilities include managing social media accounts, updating the organization’s website, and designing digital and print materials to effectively communicate with donors and stakeholders. Additionally, the Communications & Sustainability Officer contributes to grant writing and proposal development to support fundraising efforts.
A key aspect of this position involves co-managing the annual Sleep-Out events, from initial planning through post-event follow-up. This includes coordinating logistics, budgets, timelines, and communications to ensure a successful experience for participants and donors. Special event support extends beyond Sleep-Out, requiring active involvement in planning, execution, and outreach for other initiatives.
Relationship-building is central to the role, with oversight of a donor portfolio of 150–200 individuals and prospects. The Communications & Sustainability Officer works to strengthen donor engagement through strategic outreach, corporate visits, and stewardship efforts. This includes producing quarterly newsletters, e-newsletters, and annual reports that inform and inspire the donor community.
Additional responsibilities include recruiting, onboarding, and supervising assigned AmeriCorps VISTA members, acting as a media contact, and ensuring consistent brand representation across all communications. By maintaining accurate donor records and supporting the overall fundraising strategy, this role contributes to the organization's long-term sustainability and impact.
 
You need: 
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, commerce, marketing, administration, or similar areas
  • Five years or more of experience in either public relations, fundraising, or special event management. PRSA member designation a plus
  • Strong ability to relate effectively with staff, youth, and community agencies of varied cultural backgrounds and behaviors
  • Communication skills including organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to speak to and reflect CHA’s principles through independent interaction with donors, news media, and others on and off-site
  • Be approachable, build rapport well, and practice attentive and active listening.
  • Ability to navigate and become proficient with multiple software products including Microsoft Office Suite, Raiser’s Edge, DonorDrive, SharePoint, and other software platforms as needed.
  • Proficient in design software, including Canva, Adobe Suite, WordPress, and other graphic design software
  • Ability to work independently, using good judgment, and common sense
  • Ability to make good decisions consistently.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Excellent oral and written skills.
  • Basic understanding of adolescent development and behaviors.
  • Navigate and manage multiple projects at once, especially during events seasons
  • Willingness and ability to work outside of normal business hours, and Holidays and/or weekends as needed.
  • Possess a current state of Alaska Driving License
  • Have a clean driving record
  • Pass federal, state, and local background investigation
