Development and Communications Specialist

Position Summary:
 
The Development and Communications Specialist is responsible for overseeing, designing, and implementing communication strategies that align with client's developmental goals. This requires engaging in public relations, marketing, social media, and other communication-related activities to foster a positive image and support the organization’s mission. There should be a strong focus on promoting the organization’s mission and garnering support through strategic communication. Effective communication with a wide variety of stakeholders, including donors, volunteers, and the community, is paramount to client’s mission.
 
Responsibilities:
· Manage client’s online presence, including website content and social media.
· Monitor search engine optimization to increase client's chances of being found and chosen by the public.
· Assist and coordinate publicity for agency programs and fundraising events.
· Create and distribute press releases, calendar releases, and other media.
· Create and implement effective media campaigns throughout the state.
· Draft, write, and edit articles about staff, board, volunteers, families, events, programs, services, awards, appointments, and projects. Proactively seek media placement of these as news releases, PSAs, or other vehicles to increase public awareness of the agency and its services.
· Design, write, and produce agency collateral.
· Maintain the digital library. Take pictures and videos of events for publication and historical data.
· Monitor and recommend timing for social media posts and emails based on insights.
· Collaborate with other departments to ensure consistency in client’s messaging.
· Monitor and report on the effectiveness of communication strategies.
· Ensure all communications adhere to client’s brand.
· Work with the Director to develop and execute consistent communication to cultivate and grow the donor base.
· Manage donor administration activities, including drafting donor reports, entering donor data, updates, invitations, thank you notes, and other materials.
· Assist with online fundraising strategies, campaigns, and calls to action.
· Other duties as assigned.
 
Skills:
· Exceptional written and verbal communication skills to accurately convey complex information to diverse audiences.
· Experience in content creation for various platforms, including social media, newsletters, press releases, and websites.
· Strong research skills to understand client’s mission and audience and to keep up to date with the latest communication trends and tools.
· Excellent planning and organizational skills to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively.
· Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities to develop and implement strategic communication plans that support client’s goals.
· Interpersonal skills to work well with internal teams and external stakeholders, fostering collaboration and gaining support for communication initiatives.
· Knowledge of design tools and software to create visually engaging communication materials.
· Understanding of metrics and data analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of communication efforts and make improvements as necessary.
 
Requirements:
· A bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism, or a related field is preferred.
· Prior experience in development and/or communications is preferred.
· Must pass a state and federal criminal background check.
· Must have a valid Alaska driver’s license, a good driving record, and proof of auto insurance.
· Must be able to drive and use your vehicle for company business.
 
Additional Requirements:
· Ability to sit or stand at a computer workstation for up to 40 hours/week.
· Ability to maintain physical records and files by bending, reaching, climbing stairs, and occasionally lifting no more than 10 pounds.
· Ability to communicate effectively with clients, families, and staff by email, phone, virtually, and in person.
· Some travel within the State of Alaska and to conferences may be required.
