"Make it Monday" forum - Strategic Plan to Guide Alcohol Tax Funding
The Municipality is creating a plan for how to spend revenue from the Alcohol Tax. The plan will:
- Serve as guiding document for each year’s Alcohol Tax funding allocations.
- Ensure community input, transparency, and efficient use of the funds.
- Guide current and future policymakers to achieve longer-term goals and shift more funding upstream as immediate issues are addressed.
A Steering Committee of Assembly members, City staff, and diverse community partners has met several times to outline the plan vision, mission, values, and goals. Community input is being gathered on the draft plan. Hear from Assembly members Karen Bronga and Anna Brawley, both participating on the Steering Committee, about the strategic plan to guide alcohol tax funding.
PLUS, a new member presentation from Megan Militello of the UAA Alaska MEP Manufacturing Solutions.
Anna B. Brawley has called West Anchorage home for over a decade, after moving to Alaska from Columbus, Ohio in 2011 for a job opportunity. She is a planner and project manager with a local consulting firm, with degrees in history, social sciences and urban planning.
Before election to the Assembly, Anna served on the NeighborWorks Alaska board of directors, as president and secretary of Turnagain Community Council, secretary of Spenard Community Council, and as an active community volunteer and advocate. Anna also previously served as chair of the Budget Advisory Commission. She lives in Turnagain with her family and two highly opinionated cats. When not working or volunteering, she enjoys gardening, creative projects, photography, biking, cross-country skiing, and neighborhood walks.
Anna is dedicated to making Anchorage work for everyone. She has led and supported multiple policy changes to state statute and local law that solved problems impacting people's lives and businesses. She likes learning how complex systems work, like cities, and how to improve them.
Karen Bronga
I am proud to be representing the community that I grew up in, raised my family and taught in. My parents taught me love for the outdoors and the joy of nordic skiing. That skiing was my ticket to college and I was a NSAA Collegiate All-American, while studying at Montana State University. After returning to Alaska I worked in behavioral health for 6 years. My husband Tom and I have been married for 35 years. We have three children, all grown and working as engineers. I attained my teaching certificate at APU in 1998, and I went on to teach for 20 years in the Anchorage School District. My final teaching position was as an Elementary Health Teacher, which was my passion and I was awarded Health Teacher of the Year in 2018. I have volunteered throughout the community for SKiku, Anchorage Parks and Recreation, Alaska Trails, Girls on the Run, Scenic Park and Kasuun cooking club, Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage, Super Sweepers and more. My love for trails and quest for safe, non-motorized routes started me on my community council participation. For the past ten years, I’ve served as an officer on the Scenic Foothills Community Council, where I was instrumental in getting two trails built in our area. I am excited to get to work to advocate for my community.
