🏠 What does the Board do?
Unlike advisory boards, the Board of Equalization is a quasi-judicial board, empowered to make important decisions.
Every year, assessments are sent to property owners. If owners wish to appeal their valuation, they bring their appeal to the Board of Equalization. Three board members are assigned to a panel to hear the appeal and then determine whether an error has been made. With sufficient evidence, the board has the power to alter the assessment of the property.
⚖️ Who can serve on the Board?
The Board is looking for new members with experience in real estate, taxes, banking, engineering, lending, or law.
📆 What is the time commitment?
Board members serve 3-year terms, but the work itself is seasonal. After property assessments are sent to owners in January, cases come to the board beginning in April. Members attend meetings on an as-needed basis, so flexibility is key!
Scheduled at various times based on members’ availability - morning, afternoons, evenings, or weekends - sessions are held in-person at City Hall. Telephonic panel member participation is possible, however the appellant has the right to insist on an in-person hearing with all panel members present.
