Opposition to Ballot Measure 1

ANCHORAGE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ANNOUNCES
OPPOSITION TO BALLOT MEASURE 1

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA - On Friday, October 18th, 2024, Kathleen McArdle, President & CEO of the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce released the following statement:

"As one of the largest business organizations in Alaska with over 750 members representing over 40,000 employees, the mission at the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce is to advance a successful business climate by attending to the civic, economic, and cultural betterment of our community. For over 100 years we have served as a resource where members can gain business knowledge, strength, and insight, and we are motivated to support growth and success for our members, ultimately strengthening the economy for all of Anchorage.

It is our opinion that Ballot Measure 1, up for state-wide vote on Alaska’s November 5th general election ballot, is overburdened by encompassing too many issues for a single vote. As a result of this determination we have joined the Protect our Small Businesses and Jobs – Vote No on 1 campaign efforts championed by the Alaska Chamber of Commerce.

The ballot measure’s key provisions include raising the minimum wage across Alaska, mandating paid sick leave, and not requiring employees to participate in meetings outside the scope of their work.

The Anchorage Chamber of Commerce recognizes our workforce is vital to a healthy Alaska economy, and remains open to discuss these topics further, but individually. This ballot measure in its complete presentation does not set Anchorage employers up for success.

For these reasons, the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce is opposed to Ballot Measure 1."
