Nominate a Youth Hero: Summer of Heroes Returns for 2026

May 5, 2026 – Across Alaska, young people are quietly making their communities stronger. They are organizing service projects, supporting neighbors, standing up for others and stepping in where help is needed most.

Alaska Communications is inviting Alaskans to help recognize these young leaders through its Summer of Heroes program, which celebrates youth who demonstrate compassion, initiative and a commitment to helping others.

Each year, several young people are selected as youth heroes and awarded $2,000 scholarships in recognition of their community impact.

Nominations are open now through June 14 and may be submitted by teachers, family members, friends or community members who know a young person whose actions are improving life for others.

“Every year, we hear stories about young people who see a need and simply decide to help,” said Paul Fenaroli, president and CEO of Alaska Communications. “Summer of Heroes is about celebrating that spirit and recognizing young Alaskans whose compassion and leadership are already shaping stronger communities.”

This year, Alaska Communications is partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Alaska, a nonprofit dedicated to helping young people reach their full potential through mentorship and positive relationships.

“Programs like Summer of Heroes remind us that leadership doesn’t have an age requirement,” said Jill Richardson, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Alaska. “Young people across Alaska are already stepping up for others. Recognizing their contributions helps inspire even more acts of kindness, service and leadership.”

As part of the program, Alaska Communications will also donate $25 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Alaska for every new internet order purchase placed between May 5 and June 14, 2026, up to $15,000.

Summer of Heroes has recognized almost 100 young Alaskans over the years who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to their communities, from organizing volunteer efforts and supporting vulnerable neighbors to leading initiatives that bring people together.
