Municipality to take on Mountain View Community Center operations this summer

After a special meeting of the Anchorage Assembly, new plans were announced today to ensure the future of the Mountain View Community Center. Starting June 1, the Municipality’s Parks and Recreation Department will take on the center’s operations to implement access and continuity for the community.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Southcentral Alaska (BGCSAK), which has managed the Mountain View Community Center since it opened in 1998, will continue service at the facility until May 31, 2025. Parks and Recreation will oversee daily operations and programming immediately beginning June 1, 2025. While plans for the center are still being finalized, this decision was driven by input from local partners and the Mountain View community to meet evolving needs at the facility and to best serve Anchorage children, youth, and families.
“This facility is a critical community resource for the Mountain View community,” said Mayor Suzanne LaFrance. “Going forward, we are excited about the potential to expand services and explore new ways to support the children and families of Mountain View.”
In the coming weeks, Parks and Recreation will share more information and engage directly with community members to hear their priorities and desires for the future of the community center. Parks and Recreation and BGCSAK will attend the Mountain View Community Council meeting on February 26, 2025, to discuss the transition, and to ensure the center continues to serve the community’s needs to the best of its ability.
“Mountain View is a vibrant, dynamic neighborhood, and the Community Center is one of its cultural hubs,” said Assembly member Daniel Volland. “This is an exciting opportunity to engage with neighborhood residents in reimagining a safe place for families to play and learn together, and to envision what types of programming the community would like to see happen.”
“Boys and Girls Clubs of Southcentral Alaska is honored to have served the Mountain View community for nearly 30 years,” said Susan A. Anderson, CEO of BGCSAK. “During that time, we’ve cared for thousands of children and families from the surrounding neighborhoods. We are committed to partnering with the Municipality to ensure a smooth transition.”
The Municipality will continue to partner with BGCSAK in its mission to support youth at its other locations. BGCSAK will continue to provide services at its other clubs in Anchorage, Eagle River, and across the state.
