Mayor LaFrance announces $1.3 million to expand local supportive housing services
Mayor Suzanne LaFrance today announced that the Municipality, through a public contracting process, will direct $1.3 million in federal funds to expand critical supportive housing services in Anchorage.
Supportive housing is a proven model that combines permanent housing with professional supports to address an individual’s health and life challenges, helping neighbors with complex needs remain stably housed and out of the emergency system.
This funding initiative aligns with the Mayor’s commitment to improve safety and community health by helping residents maintain stable housing, and by helping homeless residents transition into housing.
"Our work in the community and feedback from local providers has made it clear: Anchorage needs more services that help people not only find a home but stay in one," said Mayor Suzanne LaFrance. "By pairing a roof over someone's head with the wrap-around care they need, we move beyond temporary fixes and toward permanent solutions."
The Anchorage Health Department is seeking proposals from nonprofit organizations providing services to clients experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless. To address the most urgent needs in our community, the Request for Proposals (RFP) focuses on the following supportive services:
- Behavioral Health: Mental health services and substance use disorder treatment.
- Medical Support: Outpatient health services.
- Stability & Growth: Case management and life skills training.
- Engagement: Outreach services to connect individuals with resources.
The RFP will open on Thursday, March 5 and will remain open for 21 days. An RFP is an open competitive bidding process used by the Municipality to find the most qualified organizations with the strongest plans for delivering results.
This one-time grant funding is intended to help nonprofits establish new programs or scale up existing programs. This “seed money” is designed to help organizations position themselves to maintain the services through other, sustainable funding sources in the future.
Nonprofit organizations are encouraged to submit proposals detailing how they would use these funds to increase and maintain supportive housing capacity. Further details on the application process and eligibility requirements will be available on the Municipality of Anchorage’s online purchasing portal.
