Matson Donated $1.5 Million to Alaska Nonprofits in 2023

$795,000 to Environmental programs
$237,121 to Education programs
$374,500 to Health and Social Services programs


ANCHORAGE (May 06, 2024) -- Matson contributed a total of $1.5 million in cash donations and in-kind services to more than 115 Alaska charitable community organizations and non-profit programs in Alaska during 2023.

Cash contributions, including funds directed by employees through the company’s Matching Gift program, added up to $560,000 in 2023, while the value of donated services and equipment totaled $942,044.

The biggest categories of giving for the year were Environmental programs, with $795,000 in cash and in-kind support; Education programs with $237,121 in cash and in-kind support; and Health and Social Services programs, with $374,500 in cash and in-kind support.

As part of its pandemic response plan, Matson made a multi-year commitment of $5 million in cash and in-kind services in 2022 to support food bank networks in Alaska, Hawaii, and Guam through 2023. The company committed another $5 million in cash and in-kind services last year to support food bank networks through 2026.

Substantial contributions of donated or discounted shipping supported food banks and food security programs in Alaska as well as environmental and recycling programs in the state.

Larger contributions in Alaska include:

  • $640,000 in-kind support for Alaskans for Litter Prevention and Recycling
  • $137,000 in-kind and cash support for the Food Bank of Alaska
  • $50,000 to support community projects that demonstrate environmental stewardship through Matson’s Caring for Alaska program
  • $49,000 in-kind and cash support for the Alaska Sealife Center
  • $45,000 for the Anchorage Museum
  • $27,000 for Covenant House Alaska
  • $22,000 for Special Olympics Alaska
Contributions supporting social equity programs in Alaska totaled $34,000.

Led by employee committees in Hawaii, Alaska, and Guam, Matson focuses its community support on local programs providing vital health care and human services; youth development / recreation; disaster preparedness and recovery; education; cultural and environmental preservation; the arts; agriculture and nutrition; and maritime safety.
