LaFrance administration deploying over $5 million in housing assistance

Today, the LaFrance administration announced that over $5 million in secured federal funding will go toward helping people get housed and keep their housing in Anchorage.
The Mayor’s Office team and the Anchorage Health Department have worked together to identify, align, and deploy two sets of federal funding for housing stability: Just over $4 million in Emergency Rental Assistance and $1.5 million in Housing and Urban Development funds (HOME-ARP).
The funds are being awarded through a competitive process. If approved by the Assembly, nine community providers will receive and distribute the support directly to residents who are either at-risk of losing their housing or currently unhoused.
“We know we need to see a lot more housing and a lot fewer people sleeping outside,” said Mayor Suzanne LaFrance. “These funds are the result of proactive work by our Municipal team to meet big problems with action. More residents housed is a win for our entire community.”
At least 150 households are expected to receive housing assistance from the funds. The Rental Assistance is short-term federal funding that can be used through September 30, 2025. The HOME-ARP housing stability funds can be used through 2026.
“Housing is key to keeping our residents, and our entire community, safe and healthy,” said Health Department Director Kim Rash. “We’re excited to partner with local Anchorage organizations to keep individuals and families in their homes and help people move from shelter into housing, ensuring that our Anchorage community can continue to thrive.”
“The housing affordability crisis in Anchorage is real,” said Assembly Member Randy Sulte, Housing and Homelessness Committee Co-Chair. “We’ve seen data that as many as 1,008 households are only 14 days from losing their home, the majority of which have at least one child. The most effective, efficient, and economical step we can take today is to keep people in the house they live in today.”
The intents to award can be found on the Municipality’s website here as 2024GP005 Social Welfare Services under the RFPs section. More information for residents about how to apply for funding will come once the awards are finalized.
