Food Bank of Alaska Receives $150,000 Grant from KeyBank Foundation to Strengthen Disaster Response
Funding will help build emergency food and transportation reserves to improve response times for communities impacted by disasters and unexpected crises across Alaska
ANCHORAGE – October 22, 2026 — KeyBank Foundation has awarded a $150,000 grant to Food Bank of Alaska to support the organization's Disaster Response Preparedness initiative. The funding will help build a reserve inventory of shelf-stable food and water, while also creating transportation resources that can be deployed quickly during emergencies throughout the state.
Food Bank of Alaska is dedicated to eliminating hunger through food distribution and anti-hunger leadership. In 2025, the organization distributed 10.1 million pounds of food through more than 150 partner agencies and affiliate food banks across Alaska, maintaining the largest distribution area in Feeding America's network at more than 650,000 square miles. One in six Alaskans face food insecurity, with prices among the highest in the nation.
Alaska faces unique food access challenges, with less than five percent of food consumed in the state produced locally and more than 80 percent of residents living in communities not connected by road systems. These factors can make it difficult to respond quickly when disasters or other emergencies occur.
"The Food Bank of Alaska plays a critical role in supporting communities across the state, especially during emergencies," said Lori McCaffrey, KeyBank Alaska Market President. "We are proud to support this effort to strengthen disaster preparedness and improve access to food for Alaskans in need."
The investment will help Food Bank of Alaska maintain emergency inventory and transportation reserves that can be deployed immediately during crises, significantly reducing response times and helping ensure food reaches communities when it is needed most.
"This investment from KeyBank will help us respond more quickly and effectively when disaster strikes," said Cara Durr, chief executive director of the Food Bank of Alaska. "Having food inventory and transportation resources available ahead of time will allow us to get assistance to communities faster and better serve Alaskans facing unexpected challenges."
“At KeyBank, we are committed to helping our community thrive,” said Regional Corporate Responsibility Officer, I.V. Reeves. “Supporting these efforts is an investment into the infrastructure and resources that help vulnerable Alaskans weather times of crisis.”
