Coca-Cola Bottling of Alaska Sponsors “Paint the Nation” Mural in Downtown Anchorage

ANCHORAGE, Alaska Today, a new mural commissioned by Coca-Cola Bottling of Alaska will commence installation downtown at 1016 W 6th Ave. Members of the community are invited to watch the mural progress throughout the week and attend an official dedication ceremony on Wednesday, Aug 26 at 11 a.m.

This mural represents Coca-Cola’s America250 partnership and “Paint the Nation” initiative, celebrating local artists across the country. The building is home to offices of the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, Representative Nick Begich, Alaska Legal Services, and several other local organizations.

“This project is a great example of how national brands like Coca-Cola can connect local communities to nationwide conversations,” said Kathleen McArdle, President & CEO of the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce. “As one of our valued members, we are excited that The Odom Corporation is celebrating local art and heritage while investing in Downtown Anchorage.”

The artist, Dawn Gerety, was born in Sydney, Australia, and raised in Girdwood. As a lifelong Alaskan with a background in pottery, woodworking, jewelry-making, and more, she was inspired by the state’s unique environment, naming the piece “Under the Midnight Sun.”

“There’s something familiar and comforting in both Alaska traditions and Coca-Cola traditions — a feeling of ‘we’ve always done it this way,’” Gerety states. “At the center of the design, the Coca-Cola sun becomes a symbolic midnight sun connecting salmon, bear, moose, mountains, and people, reinforcing the idea that in Alaska we are all part of the same landscape and the same moment together.”

Additional information about Coca-Cola’s America250 initiatives is available on the Paint the Nation website.
