Bettisworth North Names New Principal
ANCHORAGE, ALASKA - David Popiel has been named a principal at Bettisworth North, Alaska’s largest locally owned architecture firm. A licensed architect with 19 years of experience, Popiel has practiced in Alaska since 2009. The announcement was made by Bettisworth North president Tracy Vanairsdale.
“David’s creative mindset and design sensibility help deepen our culture of collaboration,” said Vanairsdale. “We are a legacy firm shaped by shared purpose and a passion for building strong Alaska communities. David brings multi-dimensional design skills and a gift for mentoring. His thoughtful approach will strengthen our company’s leadership and support our mission to create community-centered spaces.”
Popiel holds a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Colorado and a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Washington University in St. Louis. He is a LEED Accredited Professional and is certified by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB). As a project manager and senior architect at Bettisworth North, he has led projects in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Valdez, Seward and other communities in sectors that include hospitality, recreation, healthcare, housing, and childcare.
Volunteerism is a natural extension of Popiel’s commitment to building strong communities. He has served on the Alaska Huts board of directors for three years and contributed his design skills to develop an accessible backcountry hut outside of Spencer Glacier. Popiel is also a regular volunteer at Aquarian Charter School, where his children attend: helping out with field trips, reading groups, and bake sales.
“I'm honored and excited to take on this new leadership role at Bettisworth North,” said Popiel. “I look forward to strengthening relationships with our clients and partners as we continue to create vibrant, thoughtful, and resilient designs for Alaska communities.”
Based in Anchorage, Popiel engages with the company’s 41 employees across the firm’s Anchorage and Fairbanks offices and manages work across the state. Outside of work, he is an enthusiastic outdoorsman who makes the most of every season through mountain running, cross-country and downhill skiing, and enjoys Alaska’s hunting and fishing heritage.
