American Red Cross Makes Home Safer in Anchorage

Did you know that having working smoke alarms in a home can cut the risk of death or injury by a home fire in half? That’s why the American Red Cross is rallying volunteers to install free smoke alarms, as part of our nationwide Sound the Alarm campaign. On May 3rd, the Red Cross of Alaska hosted its signature spotlight city event in the community of Penland Park in Anchorage, in the Airport Heights neighborhood. In conjunction with the local fire department training center, sponsors, volunteers, and staff, there was an incredible outpouring of support for our campaign! The Red Cross installed 187 brand-new 10-year tamper-resistant smoke alarms in 72 homes in Penland Park, serving and educating 269 members of the Anchorage community including children, senior citizens, veterans, and people with disabilities.

Thanks to annual statewide partners including Alaska Commercial Company, GCI, HDR Engineering, Marathon Petroleum, and Wells Fargo, the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign can provide home fire preparedness education to the community and provide home fire relief to those in need after a home fire. If you or anyone that you know may need smoke alarms, or are interested in learning how to be a smoke alarm install volunteer, visit our website at soundthealarm.org/alaska today. It is a great team-building exercise for your company or team to learn to install alarms as Red Cross volunteers!
