Position Summary
The Vice President of Development is a dynamic and mission-driven relationship builder who leads the strategy, execution, and growth of all philanthropic revenue streams. This includes overseeing major gifts, annual campaigns, corporate and foundation partnerships, donor stewardship, and planned giving—as well as identifying and managing new grant opportunities.
We are seeking a results-oriented leader with a strong track record in fundraising, sales, or business development. Whether your background is nonprofit or private sector, this role is ideal for someone who thrives in building trusted relationships, closing revenue-generating partnerships, and inspiring people to invest in meaningful outcomes for the Anchorage community.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and execute multi-year strategies to grow philanthropic revenue across all sources: individual giving, workplace campaigns, major gifts, corporate partnerships, and grants.
- Collaborate with the President & CEO and senior leaders to integrate fundraising into organizational growth and foster a strong internal culture of teamwork, trust, and shared accountability.
- Provide leadership and mentorship to the development team, building a culture of innovation, collaboration, and accountability.
- Serve as an ambassador for United Way’s role as a convener and collaborator across Anchorage’s nonprofit and business communities, enhancing United Way’s brand and engagement.
- Oversee a diverse revenue portfolio, including individual giving, major gifts, workplace campaigns, and planned giving.
- Cultivate, solicit, and steward relationships with high-capacity donors, corporations, and foundations.
- Lead a high-performing team that manages a year-round development calendar with clear goals, milestones, and metrics.
- Build relationships across sectors—public, private, and philanthropic—to expand investment in UWA’s mission.
- Expand and deepen organizational relationships with corporations and partners by ensuring multiple points of contact between United Way and key stakeholders.
- Identify and pursue grant opportunities from foundations, corporations, and government sources.
- Collaborate with program and finance teams to craft compelling proposals and ensure compliance with grant requirements.
- Track outcomes and provide timely reports to funders.
- Partner with the Marketing & Communications team to craft compelling messages, reports, and campaigns that connect donors to impact.
- Champion a donor experience that is thoughtful, personalized, and values-driven.
- Serve as an external ambassador for UWA across business, civic, and philanthropic communities.
- Work with the Marketing and Communications team to strengthen engagement through events and campaigns.
- Develop and manage annual revenue forecasts, donor pipelines, and development dashboards that align with the organizational goals.
- Ensure donor data systems and tools (e.g., Andar, Salesforce) support insights and decision-making.
- Collaborate on annual budgeting and financial planning.
- Provide direct supervision, coaching, and support to the Philanthropy team, ensuring best practices.
- Cultivate a positive, mission-aligned team culture that promotes ownership, innovation, and cross-team collaboration.
Required
- 7+ years of leadership experience in fundraising, business development, corporate partnerships, or sales.
- Demonstrated success in meeting or exceeding revenue goals through relationship-based strategies.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills.
- Team-oriented mindset and a passion for mentoring others.
- Excellent planning, prioritization, and execution abilities.
- Knowledge of the Anchorage market and Alaska’s philanthropic ecosystem.
- Experience with major donor cultivation, corporate sponsorships, or grant seeking.
- Familiarity with donor or CRM platforms such as Andar, Salesforce, or similar.
- Prior experience in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization is helpful but not required.
- Salary: $125,000 - $145,000,DOE
