Development and Finance Manager

The Development and Finance Manager is responsible for leading and coordinating the organization’s development and fundraising activities to ensure the financial sustainability of Hospice of Anchorage.
Working closely with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, volunteers, and community partners, the Development and Finance Manager builds relationships with donors, foundations, businesses, and community organizations and develops resources to support the hospice’s mission of providing compassionate end-of-life care.
This position requires someone who is comfortable working in a small nonprofit environment, can work independently, and is passionate about hospice and community-based care. 

A Note on Authority and Boundaries
The Development and Finance Manager is responsible for leading the development function but is not solely responsible for the organization’s overall financial performance.
The position does not have responsibility for clinical care, volunteer program management, nor organizational marketing; however, it does maintain responsibility for bookkeeping and weekly financial operations.
The Development and Finance Manager will have appropriate access to the Executive Director, Board leadership, donor information, relevant organizational financial information, and other resources necessary to carry out the approved development and fundraising plan.

They should be comfortable asking for financial support while communicating with sensitivity about end-of-life care, grief, families, volunteers, and the organization’s impact. 

FUNDRAISING STRATEGY

• Develops and implements an annual development and fundraising plan.
• Establishes fundraising goals in collaboration with the Executive Director and Board.
• Cultivates, solicits, and stewards individual donors.
• Develops and manages a major-gift prospect pipeline.
• Identifies opportunities for corporate sponsorships and community support.
• Develops and maintains planned-giving and legacy-giving opportunities.
• Monitors fundraising results and provides regular reports to leadership and the Board.

DONOR STEWARDSHIP

• Ensures timely and meaningful acknowledgment of all gifts.
• Maintains regular communication with donors through newsletters, impact reports, appeals, and personal outreach.
• Develops strategies to retain and upgrade existing donors.
• Maintains accurate donor records and confidentiality.
 

GRANTS

• Researches and identifies appropriate foundation, corporate, and government grant opportunities.
 • Maintains HOA's organization-wide grant calendar, grant files, reporting schedule, award documentation, budgets, compliance requirements, and related SOPs.
• Manages grant deadlines, awards, restrictions, and reporting requirements. 
• Prepares grant applications, renewals, amendments, and reports.
• Serves as lead administrator for assigned grants and drafts applications, budgets, narratives, reports, and supporting documentation.
• Ensures program managers provide accurate service data, outcomes, narratives, and other programspecific information needed for grant reporting.
• Monitors grant expenditures and deliverables against approved budgets and award requirements and raises potential compliance or performance concerns promptly.
• Maintains organized documentation sufficient to support funder monitoring, audits, site visits, and organizational continuity.
• Maintains relationships with grant-making organizations.

FUNDRAISING EVENTS

• Manages fundraising events and campaigns.
• Supports volunteers for development activities.
• Develops sponsorship opportunities.
• Evaluates fundraising events based on revenue, expense, staff/volunteer resources, and mission impact.

BOARD SUPPORT 

• Provides the Board with regular development reports.
• Supports Board members in identifying and cultivating potential donors.
• Provides training and tools that enable Board members to participate appropriately in fundraising.
• Supports the Development/Fundraising Committee, if applicable.

COMMUNICATIONS AND STORYTELLING

• Collaborates with leadership and volunteers to develop fundraising communications.
• Helps communicate the organization’s impact through appropriate client, family, volunteer, and donor stories. Tells the Hospice of Anchorage story.
• Ensures stories and photographs are used only with appropriate authorization and respect for client and family privacy.
• Provides development information for newsletters, annual reports, fundraising appeals, website content, and social media as appropriate.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

• Develops relationships with businesses, civic organizations, faith communities, healthcare organizations, foundations, and other community partners.
• Represents Hospice of Anchorage at appropriate community events and meetings.
• Increases public awareness of Hospice of Anchorage’s mission and services.

FINANCIAL OPERATIONS & INTERNAL CONTROLS

• Manages HOA's financial operations and maintains systems that support accurate, timely, and transparent financial administration.
• Coordinates annual budget development with the Executive Director and appropriate program leaders and monitors actual performance against the Board-approved budget.
• Oversees accounts payable, accounts receivable, deposits, banking processes, transaction coding and classing, reconciliations, payroll coordination, and other routine financial workflows; delegates processing tasks when appropriate and reviews work for accuracy and compliance.
• Maintains and strengthens internal controls, separation of duties, documentation standards, approval processes, and financial SOPs.
• Reviews cash-flow information, budget variances, unusual transactions, and emerging financial concerns and promptly escalates material issues to the Executive Director.
• Coordinates accurate and timely financial information for the Executive Director, Treasurer/Finance Committee, Board, grant reporting, audit or financial review, and other required purposes.
• Works with external accountants, payroll providers, banking partners, insurers, and other financial vendors as assigned.

MISCELLANEOUS

•Other duties as assigned. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree.

  • Experience in nonprofit fundraising, development, sales, relationship management, or a related field.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong organizational and project-management abilities.

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.

  • Ability to build authentic relationships with donors and community partners.

  • Comfort working with volunteers and a Board of Directors.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and donor databases or willingness to learn.

  • Applicants must submit a current resume demonstrating relevant education, employment history (including months and years), responsibilities, and accomplishments related to the qualifications of this position.

  • Must provide three references written within the past five years.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3-5 years nonprofit development experience.

  • Experience with AR/AP and basic bookkeeping  • Experience with major gifts and foundation grants.

  • Experience working with volunteers.

  • Experience in healthcare, hospice, palliative care, social services, or another mission-driven organization.

  • Familiarity with planned giving.

  • Experience working in a small nonprofit where staff members wear multiple hats.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must successfully complete required background check, fingerprinting and maintain eligibility under applicable licensure requirements.

  • Must have current negative TB test with the first two-weeks of employment and provide proof to the organization.

  • Must maintain required training, credentials, TB clearance, and other employment documentation within established timeframes.

  • Must provide own transportation to/from work and for work-related travel within the Municipality of Anchorage including but not limited to outreach events. Must provide proof of current Alaska driver’s license and proof of automobile liability insurance of $50,000/$100,000/$25,000. 

  • Must be able to attend occasional evening or weekend Board meetings, trainings, community events, or organizational activities.

  • Work requires regular use of computers and standard office equipment and may include occasional lifting or carrying of office, event, or program materials.

  • Must comply with HOA confidentiality, ethics, conflict-of-interest, safety, financial-control, and personnel policies.
