Job Information

Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee.

This is an executive position (no union affiliation) and serves at the pleasure of the Mayor.

DEPARTMENT: Parks and Recreation
HOURS OF WORK: Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm
LOCATION: City Hall - 632 W 6th Ave

Example of Duties

The Director of Parks and Recreation accountable for control of departmental expenditures against the budget; timeliness and effectiveness of agen cy service provision; staff development and departmental employee relations; quality, level and technical ade­quacy of agency programs and services and attai.mrent of stated service goals; policy administration of the De­partment; integration of operational plans with long­range service goals and objectives; all responsibilities and authorities delegated; and special projects as as­signed by the Mayor.

Work involves comprehensive planning, directing, and coordinating the municipal parks and recreation program in accordance with accepted principles of public recreation administration, departmental financial capabilities, and policies of the Parks and Recreation Board and the City council. The employee is required to resolve technical recreational problems and recommend expansion or contraction of physical facilities or activity programs.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

 

Master’s degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Parks and Recreation or related discipline and eight (8) years of experience in parks and recreation management or a related field of which two (2) years have been in a supervisory or lead capacity.

OR

A Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Parks and Recreation or other closely related discipline and ten (10) years of experience in parksand recreation management or a related field of which two (2) years have been in a supervisory or lead capacity.

OR

Associate’s degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Parks and Recreation or related discipline and twelve (12) years of experience in parks and recreation management or a related field of which two (2) years have been in a supervisory or lead capacity.

OR

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and fourteen (14) years of experience in parks and recreation or a related field of which two (2) years have been in a supervisory or lead capacity.


Must possess a valid State of Alaska Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record at time of hire.
