Fast, affordable, and reliable broadband is not coming fast enough to rural Alaska. Four years ago, Microcom embarked on a project to provide ubiquitous broadband capacity for all of Alaska. To accomplish this mission, Microcom formed a new company, Pacific Dataport, to procure, launch, and operate a Ka-band high throughput satellite (HTS) system to provide low cost and high-speed broadband internet over the entire Alaskan landmass.

Pacific Dataport is seeking to improve telemedicine, commerce, distance education, and general communications in rural Alaska. The means to achieve this mission is chiefly technical and involves efficiently providing satellite-delivered services to Alaska. The business vision of Pacific Dataport is to be a premier provider of broadband service to rural Alaska at competitive prices.

Pacific Dataport has the unique opportunity to provide incredible change within a market that is both underserved and unserved. Technology has given us a set of tools to build an effective solution to serving rural Alaska with a broadband bridge to the world. It can be the catalyst for new business opportunities as well as new job opportunities for all Alaskans. Pacific Dataport's broadband product will play an integral role in the development of emerging economies and internet-based businesses in every community throughout Alaska.

Alexander Schumann is Director of Satellite Broadband at Microcom. Alexander is actively involved in Microcom’s satellite television and broadband sales and installation efforts across Alaska, Hawaii, and lower 48 states. Currently, Alexander is working on growing Microcom’s rural broadband business and deploying new broadband products across Alaska. He is also engaged in the development of Microcom’s Talkeetna Gateway facility. Alexander earned his M.B.A. and M.S. in Telecommunications from the University of Colorado as well as a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Alaska Anchorage.
