Chugach Electric is moving forward on the first-of-its-kind community solar project in Alaska. The installation is designed to include approximately 2,000 solar panels, generating 500-megawatt hours per year. The project will be installed on Chugach property, along the east side of Minnesota Drive, and Chugach members will be able to purchase shares. Subscribers will receive the energy output of their share to be credited on each monthly electric bill. Construction could start as soon as April 2008, once 80 percent of shares are pre-sold. Sales of shares is expected to begin in March. This project has an interest not just to Chugach members, but to Alaskans as a whole who are interested in renewable energy projects and their increased use in Alaska.
