Chamber Academy - Our Muni. Our Budget.
"Our Muni, Our Budget."
This Chamber Academy will be a participatory presentation that leads Anchorage community members through the complexities of the municipal budget and answers fundamental questions:
- where do our property taxes go?
- how are municipal services funded?
- what do we get for what we pay?
We'll discuss municipal budget trends over time, changes in local revenue sources, state divestment, and deferred maintenance. Members will leave with a greater understanding of our present financial reality and information that will inform clear-eyed decisions about our shared fiscal future.
About our Presenters:
Anna Brawley, District 3 - West Anchorage
Anna B. Brawley is a planner, project manager, and owns a small consulting firm in Anchorage, with a background in history and urban planning. She likes learning how complex systems work, such as cities, and how to improve them.
Before serving on the Assembly, Anna has served as chair of the Anchorage Budget Advisory Commission, an officer for Spenard and Turnagain Community Councils, on the board of NeighborWorks Alaska, and as a community advocate. She lives in Turnagain with her family and two highly opinionated cats. When not working, she enjoys gardening, creative projects, biking, walking, and Nordic skiing.

Erin Baldwin Day, District 4 - Midtown Anchorage
Erin is a born and raised Alaskan “boomerang kid”: after graduating from East Anchorage High School in 2000, she left to go to college in the Lower 48 and returned to Anchorage in 2009 to raise her own family in Midtown. Following fifteen years of service as a local policy advocate, community organizer, pastor, and nonprofit leader, she joins the Assembly with a particular focus on the issues that impact the daily lives of working people in Anchorage: housing supply, childcare access, and transportation infrastructure. Erin lives in University Park with her husband of twenty years, two fantastic teenagers, and a dog named Max. When she’s not at work you might find her flying down a trail on her fat tire bike, whipping up delicious messes in the kitchen, writing bad poetry, or enjoying live music. She lives by the mantra that the long moral arc of the universe only bends toward justice if the people do the pulling. Learn More.
Chamber Academy is an educational workshop geared toward business owners, entrepreneurs and young professionals. Community experts present on various topics like down-to-earth “how-to’s” and “best practices” to more abstract topics like collecting and leveraging data, exploring what it takes to create an inviting and productive work environment, and taking legislative action on issues important to your business.
With an educational focus, this event is a great networking platform for new and existing Anchorage Chamber members. Chamber Academy is held monthly at the Anchorage Chamber Board Room, or the presenter’s place of business, if preferred, from 11 am to 12 pm and includes light refreshments. Max 30 attendees. This smaller group setting encourages participation and open discussion with attendees.
