In 1977, in response to increasing offshore oil and gas development, upstream timber harvesting, and a growing fishing industry, Gov. Jay Hammond introduced the Alaska Coastal Management Act, guaranteeing state and local participation in federal decisions on any coastal issues.
In 2011, the Legislature did not renew the federally-funded program.
The Alaska Coastal Management Question will appear on the Aug. 28 ballot as an indirect initiated state statute, establishing a new coastal management program in the state.
Terzah Tippin Poe, co-chair of the Alaska Sea Party (Vote Yes on 2), and Judy Brady, co-chair of Vote No on 2, will discuss the statute in detail.
