"Make it Monday" forum - 2021 Legislative Update

This program will provide members an update on the happenings of the 2021 State Legislative Session. PLUS! A member presentation from O'Connor Law, LLC.

MODERATOR: Sarah Erkmann Ward, APR, President, Blueprint Alaska

Sarah Erkmann Ward, APR, is the president of Blueprint Alaska, the state’s leading public affairs/advocacy and communications firm. Before establishing Blueprint Alaska, Ward worked at Alaska Oil and Gas Association (AOGA), during which she honed her skills in government affairs and advocacy work. From playing pivotal roles in campaigns to preserve oil tax reform to serving as spokesperson for statewide organizations and elected officials, her experience and reputation in Alaska is well established. Ward was named the Public Relations Society of America Alaska Chapter’s “Communicator of the Year” in 2017. She is also accredited in public relations (APR) by the Public Relations Society of America.

PANEL:

• Matthew Shuckerow is the owner of Fathom Strategic Communications, an Alaska-based strategic communications firm specializing in public relations, public affairs, policy advocacy, political and campaign communications and strategy. Shuckerow has served at nearly every level of political communications and strategy across local, state and federal government over the past decade. He has successfully managed a variety of client-related and official government projects, including Alaskans for Dan Sullivan 2020 U.S. Senate campaign, press operations for Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy, U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan, Alaska Congressman Don Young, U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski, Anchorage Mayor Dave Bronson, as well as a number of other public policy, political and business industry clients.
   
• James Brooks covers state government, the Alaska Legislature and general assignments for the Anchorage Daily News. He previously reported and edited for the Juneau Empire, Kodiak Daily Mirror and Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. He is based in Juneau.
   
• Matt Buxton came to Alaska in 2011 and has been covering the Alaska Legislature and politics in one form or another ever since. He got his start with the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, where he covered the Legislature and local politics for six years, before switching gears and moving over to the blogging world with The Midnight Sun political blog. Throughout all that time, he's been an active voice on Twitter covering Alaska politics in the Legislature with a dose of humor and an animated gif or two. With the start of the 2021 legislative session he launched The Midnight Sun Memo, a daily newsletter covering Alaska politics and rounding up each day's biggest news.
   
• Stacey Stone was born and raised in Ketchikan, Alaska.  While attending law school at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, Ms. Stone worked for two summers as a law clerk in the State of Alaska District Attorney’s Office in Ketchikan, Alaska.  Following graduation from law school, Ms. Stone relocated to Anchorage, Alaska and took a position as a litigation associate at a local law firm where she tried cases before all courts in the State of Alaska.
  
  Ms. Stone joined Holmes Weddle & Barcott in 2013 and is a shareholder in the Anchorage office.  Ms. Stone maintains a diverse practice working to serve the many needs of her various clients.  She has expertise in many kinds of commercial litigation cases, provides advice and consulting regarding corporate governance, maintenance and structure, works with contractors pertaining to the various areas of construction law, and defends employers involved in workers’ compensation cases.  In addition, during election years, Ms. Stone’s practice includes providing guidance in matters related to campaign and election law, and representing candidates for local, statewide, and national office as well as industry coalitions, non-profits, ballot measure groups, and independent campaign expenditure organizations.  Ms. Stone has worked with various Alaska Native corporations in many facets including corporate governance, litigation and workers’ compensation defense.  Ms. Stone has handled cases in all courts in Alaska and has appeared in front of the Alaska Supreme Court on multiple occasions.

CANCELLATION NOTE: To receive a full refund, registration must be canceled by 5 pm the Thursday prior to the forum. No refunds will be given after this date. Punch cards will still be punched if not cancelled by 5 pm the Thursday prior, as mentioned. If you do not arrive by 12:15 pm. your seat will be forfeited. All registrations are transferable to another person upon your request.
