Alyeska Resort welcomes Alaskans to rediscover Girdwood
Residents receive 30% discount on hotel rooms; spa, bike park and aerial tram big draws for staycation splurge
GIRDWOOD, Alaska – Alyeska Resort reopens to the public on June 12, providing Alaskans the opportunity to enjoy a true resort experience and world-class dining on the border of the northernmost rainforest in the world – all without having to leave the state. At the resort, visitors will be treated to sushi at Sakura Asian Bistro, Kaladi Brothers coffee at the Tramway Café, snacks and drinks at the Bore Tide Deli & Bar, or breakfast, lunch and dinner at the Pond Café.
Alaska residents receive a 30% discount on hotel stays as a thank you for their support throughout the year and as Alyeska’s way of encouraging travel in the state to boost local economies. Find more information on the discount and how to take advantage on the Alaska rate page. With an overnight stay at Alyeska, activities like a day cruise in Prince William Sound with Phillips Cruises & Tours, wildlife viewing at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center or a glacier landing with Alpine Air Alaska will be even easier to fit into a weekend getaway.
Many Alaskans are already familiar with Alyeska’s Aerial Tram for a day trip but making it a weekend in the mountains will be even more of a draw this year. Capacity on the tram will be capped at 50% to allow for social distancing and also give riders more room to take in the views on the seven-minute ride with a vertical rise of more than 2,000 feet. This gem of the Turnagain Arm is also rare in that riders are treated to views of mountains, glaciers and a major body of water – the only resort in North America where visitors can see all of those sights with a turn of their head.
“With summer in full swing, the team and I are thrilled to reopen our doors and mountain to the public. We have made changes to our operations to ensure that our guests feel safe and comfortable during their time at the resort and that we follow all state and municipal guidelines. We’re inviting Alaskans and visitors alike to come relax and explore all that we have to offer,” said Alyeska Resort General Manager Mandy Hawes.
While amenities such as the sauna, pool and gym are closed at the moment to ensure physical distancing, the Spa at Alyeska will be open for massages and nail treatments. Hikers can also still take advantage of free tram rides down Mount Alyeska and the bike park will open on July 3. Following recommended safety guidelines, masks are required to ride the tram.
The resort is committed to guaranteeing the safety of its guests and has implemented new safety precautions following guidelines from local health authorities. Staff at Alyeska Resort have also undergone extra mandatory training on cleaning procedures to ensure guest satisfaction and the safety of everyone. Find more information about Alyeska Resort’s cleaning procedures on its COVID-19 page.
Through the pandemic, Alyeska’s owner, Pomeroy Lodging, made sure to assist the community of Girdwood by making donations to the local food pantry and paying for housing and benefits for Alyeska employees while on leave. Alyeska also regularly partners with the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center to assist its mission of caring for animals.
