2021 Set to be a Summer of Heroes

2020 was a tough year for so many. It presented a lot of challenges and some new opportunities. Through it all, Alaskans stepped up to help each other when it was needed most. Many times, youth were leading the charge. In the summer of 2021, our community’s young heroes will be in the spotlight.

Alaska Communications and Boys & Girls Clubs – Alaska are seeking youth heroes who made a positive difference in their Alaska community this year. Up to six selected youth each will be awarded a $1,500 scholarship through Alaska 529 and given special recognition in their local communities.

Anyone can nominate a young hero in their life. A hero is an Alaskan, between the age of six and 18, who has made a contribution to his or her community through acts of kindness or bravery. Individuals and businesses are encouraged to nominate Alaska youth by submitting a nomination form by July 2.

In addition to providing youth scholarships and recognition, the Summer of Heroes program also supports leading youth development programs. Through the pandemic, Boys & Girls Clubs – Alaska has worked to serve youth in need through non-traditional methods. They can use our help now, more than ever.

Alaska Communications has pledged to donate $25 to Boys & Girls Clubs – Alaska for every new Unlimited or Business Internet connection between May 10 and July 2, 2021, up to $15,000 total.

“It’s up to each of us to support and uplift others in our community. We’re proud to support a program that puts a spotlight on remarkable young people and youth development programs,” said Bill Bishop, president and CEO of Alaska Communications.
For more than a decade, the Summer of Heroes scholarship program has recognized and celebrated the ways young people are making positive contributions to our statewide communities.

“Today’s local heroes are Alaska’s future leaders. We are honored to be able to work with them and invest in their future,” said Alana Humphrey, CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs – Alaska.

About the Summer of Heroes Logo
Each year, the program’s logo changes slightly to highlight a youth hero recognized the year prior. The 2021 logo features Asya Gipson, from Eagle River, Alaska. Asya is known for supporting her peers and volunteering every chance she gets. She’s a passionate anti-racism activist. She helped collect food donations for families in need, held bake sale fundraisers, volunteered at elementary schools and mentored high school freshmen. During the pandemic, she stepped up to co-found Masked Mission AK, sewing hundreds of masks and creating informational videos with tips to help reduce COVID-19 risks. Our logo portrays Asya in the leadership role she’s come to earn. We’re cheering her on as she blazes new trails and improves the lives of those around her.
