SUMMARY:"Make it Monday" forum - Housing Action Week - the Anchorage Assembly’s Work to Expand Housing Development in Anchorage
DESCRIPTION:Anchorage is in the midst of a housing crisis\, compounded by the lack of new housing development in recent years. Piecemeal solutions have only resulted in incremental improvements and have not done enough to create the amount of affordable\, attainable housing that is required to meet our community's economic\, public health and quality of life needs.\n\n\n\nRecognizing the shortage of attainable housing in all areas of the Municipality\, the Anchorage Assembly has made Housing Action one of its top priorities in 2023. The Assembly is united in the goal to remove red tape to make it easier to develop diverse and abundant housing so that everyone who wants to live in Anchorage can find a home that meets their needs.\n\n\n\nBut the Assembly cannot revitalize our local housing stock on their own. This talk kicks-off Housing Action Week\, a series of community events and discussions on the topic of the future of housing in Anchorage\, which culminates in the Community Housing Action Summit on Friday\, November 3. More info can be found at: www.muni.org/assembly. \n\n\n\nAssembly Member Sulte will talk about some recent changes\, such as eliminating parking minimums and expanding Accessory Dwelling Units\, as well as proposals that will soon come before the Assembly\, including expansion of three and fourplexes\, tracking Short-Term Rentals\, and investigation of tiny homes and manufactured homes. Assembly Vice Chair Zaletel will share more details on the Housing Opportunities in the Municipality for Everyone (HOME) Initiative she sponsored with Members Volland and Brawley to simplify residential zoning and create more flexible\, inclusionary zones that align with the Anchorage 2040 Land Use Plan.\n\n\n\nIn addition\, Mayor Bronson will speak to the Municipality of Anchorage and Eklutna\, Inc. agreement that will bring more housing to Eagle River. PRESS RELEASE\n\n\n\nPLUS! A new member presentation from Daniel Morris of Alaskan Sights & Bites.\n\n \n\n\n\n\nMeg Zaletel\n\nFresh out of law school\, Meg took a job with the Disability Law Center of Alaska in Anchorage\, sight unseen. This job not only brought her to Alaska\, but gave her valuable experience working on systemic issues. Since joining the Assembly in 2019\, she has been instrumental in expanding the Municipality's work around behavioral health and homelessness which improve overall public health and safety. Meg lives in Midtown with her husband Zach\, their daughter Zelda\, and three dogs\, one cat and four chickens. Meg became the Assembly Vice Chair in April 2023 and is currently the Co-Chair of the Budget and Finance Committee and Chair of the Enterprise and Utilities Committee.
